UBSOS (University of Buckingham Supporting Overseas Schooling)

Patrick Byrne and other volunteers in the village of GalleAfter the devastating tsunami of 2004 students and staff members at the University set up a fund to help those in need. Many of our current students and alumni originate from the affected countries and that is how UBSOS was born. Our main focus has been to help educate children in deprived countries and to encourage education as a means for a better life.

UBSOS organises fund raising events such as pamper days, book and tabletop sales, and raffles. We have also raised money through car washes, concerts and lectures held at the University, and through the creation of the 'UBSOS Cookbook' - a collection of recipes donated by staff, students and friends.

With the continuous support of friends, and the student and staff body at the University we have been able to provide study material and medical supplies in Sri Lanka, and financial help and school furniture in Kenya. We have also participated in other local projects in both countries with the help of some of our members who travelled to those destinations.

UBSOS began 2008 in Mexico, where we are working with other committed individuals to help towards the establishment of a vocational centre for disadvantaged young people. This centre will provide psychological, vocational, and skills training to those who cannot afford to return to education with a special focus street children. In Argentina we are taking part in a project to help small indigenous communities in rural areas of the Chaco province. Financial help and support has been agreed for young members of the Toba community who have educational needs.

We are extremely grateful to those who have helped us so far. There is however still a lot more to be done. Having access to education is a way of achieving a better life. Do contact us at ubsos@buckingham.ac.uk and join our team.

Download the UBSOS newsletter for more details of our recent projects (PDF file, 2668 KB). If you would like to make a donation, please make cheques payable to 'The University of Buckingham' and write 'UBSOS' on the back. Cheques should be sent to the Alumni Office, The University of Buckingham, Yeomanry House, Hunter Street, Buckingham, MK18 1EG.

Friday 30 April 2010 saw another of the Franciscan Library's homemade cake sales in aid of UBSOS. The aims of the sales are not only to raise much needed funds, but also to raise awareness of UBSOS particularly amongst new staff and students. Over £70 was raised. Christine, Margaret and Sue would like to thank everyone who helped them make the cakes: Anne Matsuoka, Beth Carter, Harriet Hamilton, Liz Mayston, Margaret Surzyn, Nicki Stuchbury and Rebecca Lewis. Thanks also to everyone who supported us by buying cakes.
